Drake's Birthmark

Well when Drake was born I was told that he had a birthmark. They didn't tell me what kind of birthmark or anything. They just said there was no reason to worry. When I took him to his pediatrician he just said it was a port wine stain and that they would schedule a appointment with the dermatologist and let me know when I could go see the doctor. This was at 2 weeks of age. Drake is now 3 months and I have yet to hear anything. I took him for his check up not to long ago and the doctor said nothing about the birth mark. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and find out exactly what my son has and what can be done about it. So I found out that it is a port wine stain and that the skin isn't a different color, in fact what u see is where the blood vessels dilate and the blood collects in that spot. There isn't any reason for me to worry since it is not near his eye or on his forehead so there is no real reason to believe that it is caused by an underlying condition. The one thing I did read that got my attention tough is that if it's not treated the affected area can actually become thick and darker in color even becoming dark purple. I don't mind his birthmark, I actually find that it is one of the things that make my son unique. But our society is not so accepting of people and differences. I can't tell you how many times people tell me,"Oh my your kids are so gorgeous look at those eyes on your daughter and son and oh my look at your daughter's hair she is so beautiful! Oh and your son is so handsome!" But as soon as the baby moves his face a certain way or the blanket brushes off his face I get,"oh poor baby he has a birth mark." What is that suppose to mean? Because of his birthmark he no longer is a cute baby? Does it bother you that my son has a mark on his face? That is such a back handed compliment! "oh your so cute for someone having a mark on his face!" Now at this moment he doesn't understand what people are saying but I do! And every time I get a comment like that I say."He is still handsome no matter what!" But I know I am not always going to be there for him to stand up for him so I have decided to do something about it to make him feel more comfortable and like he doesn't have to prove something to everyone he meets just because of his appearance. So I welcome you thru his journey of removing his port wine stain, possible future complications, and educating people about what his birthmark is.

Here is a picture of what his birthmark looked like days after his birth.
